DVD means “digital versatile disc” or “digital video disc“. It is an optical storage disc mainly used for video, audio and computer date storage. With the same size as CD, most DVDs can store more than six times data and run much faster than CDs do. As well, DVD has high quality digital video, audio, picture and other sort information. Standard DVD use red light laser in the wavelength of 650 nm.
DVD-ROM, means Read Only Memory, the data stored on it can only be read but not written. It is the basic format that data be held.
DVD-R and DVD+R, only can record data one time, the other functions are as DVD-ROM.
DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM, this variation can record, erase and written data many times.
DVD application formats include DVD-Video, DVD-Video Recording (DVD-VR), DVD+RW Video Recording (DVD+VR), DVD-Audio Recording (DVD-AR), DVD-Audio (DVD-A), and Super Audio CD (SACD). DVD-Video and DVD-Audio discs respectively refer to properly formatted and structured video and audio content. Other types of DVDs, including those with video content, may be referred to as DVD-Data discs. There are also special application formats designed for game consoles such as Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox.

DVD-9 can hold approximately 7.95 gigabytes of data, even though marketers like to use the 8.5GB value instead, but this is misleading and is calculated by using so-called “Japanese gigabytes” which means that gigabyte is calculated as 1,000 megabytes, but in real computer terminology, gigabyte is 1,024 megabytes.
DVD-9 DVD-Video discs are problematic for DVD-R owners, because the cheap, writable single-layer DVDR discs can only hold the same amount of data that DVD-5 discs contain, due technical reasons. However, there are several ways to copy a DVD-9 disc to a standard, single layer DVD-R or DVD+R disc — we have several guides available how to do this on our guide section.
DVD-9 is nowadays often used as the marketing term for dual layer DVD-R and DVD+R discs and use of that name is quite appropriate as the dual layer recordable discs can hold exactly the same amount of data as “pressed” DVD-9 discs can.
DVD5 is an acronym that means a DVD disc that is one-sided single-layer disc and can contain upto 4.38 gigabytes of data on it.
DVD disc manufacturers love to use marketing terms and sell their discs as 4.7GB discs, but this is not true — the 4.7GB is calculated by using so-called “Japanese gigabytes”, where the power of calculations is 1,000 instead of 1,024 (and 1.024 is the correct way to calculate everything in computer world — so, 1024 megabytes == 1 gigabyte).
DVD5 DVD-Video discs are nice, because DVD writers (this applies to both, DVD-R and DVD+R standards) can only write single layer discs.

Some DVD rippers include additional features such as Blu-ray support, DVD and Blu-ray Disc decryption, copy protection removal, and the ability to make discs unrestricted and region-free. While most DVD rippers only convert video to highly compressed MP4 video files, there are other rippers that can convert DVD videos to high quality uncompressed video.
